Art Gallery of Regina - VANISH: Art and Illusion

VANISH: Art and Illusion, curated by Jack Anderson at the Art Gallery of Regina. Prompted by a continued interest among artists in perceptually-based art, the artists in Vanish deploy optical illusions, 3D effects, anamorphosis, persistence of vision and stereoscopics in order to destabilize the fixed order of things. Confusing the eye and mind - pointing through distortions in the perceptual field to incogruities in the cultural field. Artists include Chris Cran, David Garneau, Jay Gazley, Katharine Harvey, Marc Hutchinson, Joe Kelly, Angela Lucas, John Noestheden, Gerald Piwowar, Jon Sasaki, Jeremy Stanbridge, David Tuttle, and Zane Wilcox. From December 11, 2008 – January 24, 2009. (view catalogue)

New Painting in Vancouver

Featured artist in Vytas Narusevicius’ online review New Painting in Vancouver. This edition includes four emerging artists (Jay Gazley, Matthew Brown, Eli Bornowsky, and Paul Carr) who deal with abstraction in thoughtful and innovative ways. Each of them challenges the space between the immediate and the mediated - a place where things are not quite what they seem. These works take on a painterly immanence that gives them a peculiar life of their own. All these artists approach abstraction in very different ways, not only technically, but also conceptually. What makes them collectively so exciting is that they are clearly infused with a range of possibilities that seem to encourage and elicit the exploration of newfound territories.
